St. Elsewhere

by @ Saturday, December 8th, 2007. Filed under General, TV

Last year, Fox put out the first season of that great 80s hospital drama St. Elsewhere on DVD. It didn’t sell very well, so Fox isn’t releasing a second season. If you were like me and finished the DVD set hungry for more, tune to American Life TV, a new network that recently picked it […]

What I’m watching on television

by @ Sunday, February 18th, 2007. Filed under TV

I don’t watch too much television, although I do spend quite some time sitting in front of the set watching DVDs. But here are some of the current programs that I do watch:
-Jericho. This isn’t a great show but I’m a sucker for apocalyptic movies and TV shows. The acting is incredibly bad, making it […]

This is kind of old news - Joseph Barbera died two weeks ago - but I saw this cool picture just today.

It’s really nice even though Jerry looks shocked rather than sad. Maybe he just saw a ghost? I also wonder why Rosie the Robot was invited to the funeral, but not Mrs. Flintstone or […]

Walking in the air

by @ Thursday, December 14th, 2006. Filed under General, TV

The 1982 Academy Award-nominated British short The Snowman is one of my favorite films, period. It’s beautiful, joyful, sad, and now legendary. I remember seeing it on television when I was younger, and was familiar with the Raymond Briggs book as well. More, including video, after the jump.

Year Without update

by @ Wednesday, December 13th, 2006. Filed under General, TV

As expected, nobody watched NBC’s atrocious The Year Without a Santa Claus. The ratings (households: 4.8/8, #9; adults 18-49: 2.5, #T10) were down 50 percent from its 8 pm lead-in, Deal or No Deal.
Also, I was thinking that maybe The Year Without a Santa Claus was originally a book. I looked into it, and indeed, […]

Cosmic Nelvana

by @ Wednesday, December 13th, 2006. Filed under General, TV

Today’s special (and yeah, they’re mostly animated) is a wonderful, mostly forgotten Clive A. Smith/Nelvana Studios production from 1977. And again Canadian, although it aired in the US as well. Read all about it after the jump.

I can go a lifetime without this one

by @ Tuesday, December 12th, 2006. Filed under General, TV

I enjoyed the Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas special The Year Without a Santa Claus a lot, but last night’s cheezy remake/rape starring John Goodman is one of the worst times I have ever had sitting in front of a television set. It was even worse than National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s whatever-the-rest-of-the-title-was from a […]

Oooooohhhhh

by @ Monday, December 11th, 2006. Filed under General, TV

Okay, there’s nothing rare, odd, unusual or obscure about A Garfield Christmas Special, but it’s one of my favorites and there’s one shot that I absolutely love. I remember hitting the rewind button over and over again to watch this - it just looked so silly. Throughout the program it’s hilarious to see Jon turn […]

The Energy Carol

by @ Sunday, December 10th, 2006. Filed under General, TV

Today’s Christmas special is an energy conservation effort by the Canadian government. Les Drew’s 1975 short The Energy Carol is strange but fun. It’s original and well-drawn and funny while it’s purpose is to get Canadians to save on energy consumption.

Welcome back Eddie

by @ Tuesday, November 21st, 2006. Filed under Movies, TV

His bad movies were his ticket out, but I’m really happy that Eddie Murphy is now back. At least, if I’m to believe all the hype surrounding Dreamgirls.
Last night - like I do every night - I set my alarm to 1 am so I could wake up to catch the replay of Oprah. I’m […]

Blue Munsters

by @ Sunday, October 8th, 2006. Filed under DVD, Movies, TV

The black-and-white comedy series The Munsters spun off a feature in 1966, when the show was canceled after two seasons on CBS. Munster, Go Home had the family move to England, where Herman Munster had inherited a castle. It’s a very funny film, and it’s great to see the Munsters in color. […]

Who’s staying and who’s going?

by @ Thursday, August 31st, 2006. Filed under TV

Nobody but me cares about this, but I’ll write about it anyway.
Towards the end of each Summer, speculation begins about the Fall’s new Saturday Night Live cast. Which regulars will return? Who will be added to the cast? Who hasn’t been asked back?
In recent years, Saturday Night Live has become one of the most […]

Generalisimo Francisco Franco is still dead

by @ Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006. Filed under General, TV

This just in: In a weird six degrees variation, I am a part of a chain that brings Saturday Night Live full circle with the late Spanish head of state, whose death was a running gag on Weekend Update. You see, I wrote a book about one of the original SNL writers (plugged shamelessly in […]

Press Your Luck no more

by @ Monday, March 13th, 2006. Filed under TV

Peter Tomarken, 63, the host of the early 80s game show Press Your Luck, and his wife died in a plane crash today: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060314/ap_en_tv/small_plane_crash

Just this morning, MSN had this to say about Tomarken and Press Your Luck in an article about the all-time greatest game shows: “It may have featured the flattest host of any […]

I was wrong.

by @ Sunday, March 12th, 2006. Filed under TV

Mr. Magoo lives, and I couldn’t be happier because he’s such a memorable character. I can’t wait to see next week’s episode. That new show Big Love sure isn’t bad, either.

Uncle Junior, what’s going to happen?

by @ Sunday, March 12th, 2006. Filed under General, TV

On Friday I called the cable company to subscribe to HBO again. I always do when The Sopranos start, and then cancel shortly after they’re over. I can’t wait until a few hours from now when Season 6 starts. It’s been about two years since the last season. Moreover, this is the last season. […]
